2017 marked the first year of our participation in the “Each One, Teach One” program. We have heard time and again that our community wants us to be a better provider of financial literacy; and to be honest, we couldn’t agree more. In the past we have offered programs and products that encourage budgeting or saving, but we now understand that information is the best tool.
As such, during 2017 we began running workshops in our local schools. To date we have run 9 workshops for students, each ranging between 60 and 90 minutes. This includes 3 general workshops to grade 7 students at Hutton, Christina Lake, and Perley. As well as 3 workshops to grade 9 students on the topic of “Basic Banking”, and 3 workshops to grade 10 students about “Basic Budgeting”.
“Each One, Teach One” is a program that is delivered directly by Credit Union staff. Program coordinators have certified more than 60 Credit Unions across the country to participate in the program. Here at gfcu, we must give endless thanks to Connie Hajdasz and Heather Tresnich. As our certified “Each One, Teach One” staff members, these two put forward their own personal time and effort to bring this program to life here in the Boundary. Heather and Connie have accomplished a huge amount in a short time, and feedback from the community has been very positive.
Although we are currently focusing on students, the great part of this program is its adaptability for people of all ages and life stages. We look forward to bringing this to more and more community members as time goes on. If you know any group or organization that might benefit from a free workshop like this, feel free to reach out to Connie or Heather.
