Flood Fundraising and Relief Efforts at gfcu
As we are all aware, this year’s flood has caused unimaginable damage and distress to many. While, we are looking at what we can do as an organization in the long-term to help those directly impacted, we really wanted to try and provide some short-term relief as well. As such, we have been running a donation account here in the branch, that is also hooked up to an online fundraising effort through “Go Fund Me”.
The generosity from individuals and businesses has been tremendous, and so far we have raised $140,000. This money has been going out to those hit by the flood in various ways, and has been divided into smaller amounts to try and provide short term relief for those in need. The first round of applications saw approximately $50,000 go directly into the hands of home owners and renters who were evacuated. The second round of funding has placed approximately $70,000 into the hands of small business owners and employees that were unable to work because of the flood.

Aside from the financial relief, several gfcu staff have been spending their Saturdays down on the ground with Samaritans Purse. That organization has been doing some great work on organizing volunteers and clean-up projects throughout the flooded areas. It has been great to see so many people take time out of their day to help friends, neighbors and strangers – both local and non-local!
