2018 Flood Update
Unquestionably, this springs flood changed everything about 2018 for our entire community. People’s lives were forever changed, and we all were witness to the truest test of a community’s resilience. At the credit union, we experienced this all first hand through our staff and our members – and despite the trauma, we time and again saw people at their best. Neighbors helping neighbors, staff helping staff, members helping members... countless stories.
The credit union has been working with directly impacted individuals on a case by case basis, and we want to be clear that we are here to help however we can. While we tried to rack our brains for a single solution to offer people hit by the flood, the fact is that everyone has been facing drastically different situations. So instead, our account managers have a few various parameters to work with and are here to listen to each and every story. If there is a way we can financially relieve a member in a hard situation, we will do our best to make it happen. If you or anyone you know has been hesitant to come in for that conversation, we want to change that. Our staff have become very experienced in the matter and have flexible options to help. A simple conversation can go a long way, so please contact us anytime. info@gfcu.com | 250-442-5511
We also want to thank our members, our community, our neighbors, and everyone else that donated to the flood relief fundraiser held from May through the fall. Donations continued trickling in as late as November and we were able to fund every grant application for flood relief that came through our door. $500 was given to each individual home owner / renter, $750 was given to those who lost work because of the flood, and $1250 was given to small business owners who were hit. At the end of the day, this fundraiser brought in over $190,000 in donations! So once again, thank you to everyone who contributed. Moving forward, all donations should find their way to the Phoenix Foundation’s new fund “The Path Home”. This new fund will continue to provide funding directly to those who need it.
